Rob Costlow - I Do

Merhaba arkadaşlar derslerden dolayı yazamıyorum kusruma bakmayın artıkın. Yapacağım dediğim röportajı yaptım. Klasik müzik severlere bu çok iyi gelecektir. Ben falan ders çalışırken açıyorum arkada tıngırdıyo öyle süper oluyo. Solo piano çalıyor arkadaşımız. Röportajda da baya sıcak bir tavır sergiledi. Röportaj şimdilik ingilizce. Vakit bulup çevirdikten sonra yazıya ekleyeceğim. Arada bakıverin. Röportaj devamda.

- How are you Rob ? First of all thank you for accepting my review request. Why piano?

-When I was very young, some of my brothers took piano lessons before me. We had a piano in our home. I used to bang around on it as well as listen to my brother’s practice. So, to see if I wanted to learn the fundamentals my parents started me in piano lessons when I was 5.

- Nice, so what’s your suggestion to newbie piano and keyboard players?

-Whatever instrument, don’t stop lessons and learning until you learn the fundamentals. Then you probably won’t be disappointed later in life like many people who start and stop too early. Many people I know changed their mind later in life and wish they kept learning enough so they could play now. It’s not impossible to learn later in life, just easier as a kid.

Once you learn the fundamentals and you really don’t like playing music, stop. Instruments require passion to play. Find something else you’re passionate about.

- thanks for advise. why are you spreading your songs as free? In many countries artists dont want to do that. Is that a art believe?

-It was a test – one to see if people liked it, and second to grow and audience. It was a trade off due to not having much money for marketing. It’s worked and music is meant to be shared. If I’m in this for fortune and glory, it really takes the meaning and passion out of it. A good product will produce revenue.

Going out and peforming never worked for my style of music. Mostly due to piano settings being treated more like background music. People didn’t know I was playing my own music unless they came up to the piano. So, I stopped performing and used the Web. I have several profiles and let them organically grow. I don’t go out and attempt to friend everyone. I want them to be true fans. Word of mouth works. The Web is working and I hope to peform in various settings in the future where I can actually talk and interact with the audience.

There are also other revenue streams. I have over 80 commercial licenses. Other merchandise such as sheet music, special events and physical CDs produce revenue as well. I also hope to write for other artits in the future. It’s still up to people if they want to pay. I truly appreciate the donations and fans can purchase music on my site or most digital networks like iTunes.

In the end there are always ways to get music for free. It’s just in some people’s nature. So, I made it legal and valuable to me at the same time via Creative Commons. I’d rather know who’s downloading versus not being able to communicate and distribute more to my fans. And true fans will do their best to support an artist. Radiohead’s release last year was a good example of that.

To add, I hope when I do publicly perform in the future, the fans I’ve gained in this non-traditional manner will spend a few dollars to come out in support and listen to live music.

- Hmm. it is really nice for you. let’s talk about out of the music. what do u think about new USA prsident? he really will be alright to all of us?

-I’m excited and I hope for the best. I don’t really blame any past president for our country being divided. I see much of the issue with people judging each other. We need to stop judging as well as focus on unity and what’s best for our country and the world. I hope Obama really helps with these ideals.

-So final question is what do you know about Turkey? Maybe u know, we have a bad image in strangers minds. be honest.

-I honestly don’t know much about Turkey. I know your government is a representative democracy. Ankara is the capital, but Istanbul is the largest city. Mt. Ararat may or may not contain what some people think is Noah’s Ark. The Turkish Riviera is supposed to be beautiful (as is most of Turkey from what I’ve heard). Also the past home of Troy and Celsus Library.

I don’t know much else. That’s terrible isn’t it!?

- Umm i got it. thank you for that enjoyest conversation. i’m glad to met you Rob. good luck for future.

-Thanks so much for reaching out and interviewing me. All the best to you.
